California Street in the Richmond, 7 January 2012.
A look down California Street from the non-famous end, taken while standing on a traffic island at 32nd Avenue. An interesting view of my neighborhood and where it is in relation to downtown, some of which you can see in the distance. Golden Gate Park would be four blocks to the right, and the Presidio is two blocks to the left (thus the fact that our neighborhood was, for quite some time, officially known as the ‘Park Presidio District’ to avoid confusion with Richmond, CA across the bay).
The Richmond isn’t exactly a tourist destination—that’s all in the northeastern part of town. It’s more of a mini-suburb, full of two- and three-decker houses and apartments, with mini-pockets of shopping areas, such as Clement and Balboa Streets. California Street, interestingly enough, is one of the quieter streets in the neighborhood, as Geary Boulevard is the primary shopping and traveling thoroughfare (it’s also the one that stretches all the way to Ocean Beach, whereas California stops at the foot of Lincoln Park).
I miss this ‘hood.
